Texting and driving is illegal in most states of the USA.
It's illegal because it's risky and it's risky because there are three ways it distracts drivers:
- Visual distraction is when your eyes are not on the road.
- Manual distraction is when your hands are doing anything more than operating basic 'eyes-free' controls.
- Cognitive is when your mind is focussing on tasks other than driving like speaking to a caller or writing a crafty text message on the go.
In 2014, 3,179 people were killed, and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers according to distraction.gov.
So it's clear it's risky and costs lives and it's illegal in almost all states of the USA:
But there is a cost involved if you are caught texting while driving.
